Berkeley Audio Design Alpha USB Series 2 Noise Isolating Interface
$2495
Functionally, the Alpha USB does what many sub-$500 devices do: converts USB to SPDIF. But that’s where the similarities end. The Alpha USB is not just the best device of its kind; it also provides a state-of-the-art method for getting music out of a computer and into a DAC. Adding the Alpha USB is like sharpening the focus on a camera and snapping images into vivid clarity. The entire presentation becomes more coherent, better resolved, and more lifelike. New Series 2 takes the sound quality to the next level of realism. RH, 214, 348

dCS Lina Word Clock
$7700
A companion to dCS’ three-model, entry-level Lina Series (which includes a Network DAC and headphone amp), Lina uses the same core technologies as dCS’ Rossini and Vivaldi. In concert with NG’s Bartok Apex DAC, it created a more finely wrought sense of continuousness across the stage, complete with complex dimensional cues and atmospherics. There was greater connectedness between musicians and an increased sensitivity to the air and space around each player. Additionally, there was an utter lack of smearing at very low levels. These attributes seemed elusive at first, but once observed and keyed in upon, the ear begins to rely on them and “clocks” them in their absence. Lina was at its most incisive when given high-resolution material to work with. Lina’s gentle virtues have a mysterious way of sneaking up on you. NG, 349
