2024 Golden Ear: Diptyque DP 160 MKII Loudspeaker

New on the scene in the U.S., the Diptyque 160 MKII is a planar-magnetic panel speaker measuring 63″ tall by 21″ wide and weighing 110 pounds. The 160 MKII come standard in white or black paint with leather accents in black, white, caramel, or chocolate. It is 87dB sensitive and has a frequency response of 30Hz to 22kHz. The Diptyques are what I would consider a two-and-a-half-way design with two identical bass cells and one 22″-long ribbon tweeter. Aesthetically inoffensive considering their size, these tall wide panels give you that classic, seductive planar speed, resolution, and massive stage, which grab you and hold tight. The Diptyque’s low-frequency extension and dynamic punch eliminate the usual need for a small sub with planars. Combining pace, rhythm, speed, and an ideal tonal and timbral palate, the 160 MKIIs entice and reward. They may be new to the scene, but they are the real deal. Golden Ear well deserved. (Forthcoming)
