High-End Audio Buyer’s Guide 2024: YG Acoustics Peaks Tor

YG Acoustics Peaks Tor

$10,500 (dedicated Tor stands $1500/pr.)

When YG Acoustics was sold in 2017 by founder Yoav Geva, manufacturing remained at a newly enlarged facility in Arvada, Colorado, while R&D was taken over by a team led by Dr. Matthew Webster in Cambridge, England. An early goal was to develop a loudspeaker line that was more affordable than the Carmel, Hailey, and Sonja models beloved by well-heeled audiophiles, and thus the Peaks product range was born. A resin-fiber material is utilized for the enclosure, save for the front baffle, which is still aluminum like YG’s pricier offerings. The Tor is the larger of two Peaks stand-mounts, a 2-way employing YG’s ForgeCore tweeter and a 7″ BilletCore woofer machined from a solid block of aluminum. The human voice is exceptionally well-served; bass reproduction is more substantial than might be anticipated from a speaker of this size. The Tors parse timbral and dynamic nuance beautifully and—within reason— enthusiastic volume levels are handled with assurance. (337)
